Kodokan is the largest clan school built by Nariaki Tokugawa, Mito’s ninth feudal lord, in 1841. It was like a university in its time which students can learn about medical, pharmacy and astronomy etc.. The last shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa also received a special education here from 5 years old. After the Restoration of Imperial Rule in 1867, Yoshinobu was in Shizen-do which is on Kodokan site.
