Kodokan Mito Han School

Recommended Spot

Kodokan used to be the largest clan warrior school, which was built by Nariaki Tokugawa, Mito’s ninth feudal lord, in 1841. It was like a university at that time, where the students could learn even medicine, pharmacy and astronomy etc. as well as the martial arts. The last shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa had also received a special education here for six years since he was five years old. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Yoshinobu spent four months being confined to a room of Shizen-do, which is on Kodokan site as it was.
